Paint Application Methods
Brush
Advantages
- Best way to paint complex objects and shapes.
- Very Versatile.
- Not wasteful.
Disadvantages
- Very Slow.
- Appearance not always good (brush marks).
- Limited for fast-drying paints.
Roller
Advantages
- Moderately fast compared to brush.
- Not wasteful.
Disadvantages
- Slower than spray.
- May deposit “trash” in film (e.g. roller material).
Conventional Air Spray
Advantages
- Fast and uniform method.
- Good appearance.
- High film build.
Disadvantages
- Skill required.
- Overspray a problem.
- High volume of air required.
- High material loss up to perhaps 40%.
- Blow back.
Airless Spray
Advantages
- Uniform appearance.
- High film build.
- Low paint loss.
- Fast and efficient.
- Applies very viscous material.
Disadvantages
- Expensive equipment.
- Skill required.
- Can be dangerous – high pressure at tip can damage tissue.
Air-Assisted Airless Spray
This new evolution in spray technology combines the benefits of conventional air-spray such as a high level of control, particularly with thinner finish films, with the benefits of airless spray such as low wastage and high volume delivery for thick film products such as surfacers and fillers.
